LAD #12 Calhoun

Calhoun went to the Senate to discuss an issue that was threading the unity of America, slavery. The 3/5 Compromise seemed fair to balance powers in the North and South. However the North soon gained representation and thus gained power. Calhoun believed that if one faction were to gain complete control as they needed to do was have majority of states and population in the Senate. The North was going to gain 5 new states, while the South was not going to gain any; thus leading to an unbalance in power between the North and the South. Calhoun also claimed that the tariffs were only benefitting the North leading the wealthy northerners to gain power at the expense of southern farmers. The North also attracted immigration which helped the North to gain power. Slavery was felt to be immoral by the North while the South saw it necessary for their economy and if removed would drastically hurt them. He also said that the only way the South could get power back as if the North lent power back by giving them the rights to represent newly acquired territory and return fugitive slaves, if this was accomplished the threat of secession would dramatically reduce.
